Sony Continues Leading Exhibitor Shift to Digital with More Than 13,000 Sony Digital Cinema 4K Projectors Shipped Worldwide

At CinemaCon 2012, Sony Digital Cinema today announced that its technology is increasingly being found at the heart of today’s cinema experience, as the company reached the milestone of more than 13,000 Sony Digital Cinema 4K projectors shipped worldwide. Sony revealed that demand for its broad range of digital cinema solutions is growing with complementary services and technologies signed on at hundreds of exhibitor sites.

The news comes as Sony continues to innovate in digital cinema technology, with the expansion of Sony’s broad digital cinema portfolio, including Sony Entertainment Access Glasses with audio, now available for exhibitors, in support of hearing, or visually impaired audiences.

“Sony Digital Cinema technology is being deployed at an astounding pace and that’s testament to the unsurpassed quality and innovation we’ve displayed in addressing exhibitor’s needs, and our commitment to furthering their businesses,” said David McIntosh, Senior Vice President, Digital Cinema, Professional Solutions Europe.

“CinemaCon 2012 marks a new chapter in Sony Digital Cinema’s business as we continue to unveil new products and services designed to further the art of cinema, benefiting exhibitors and moviegoers everywhere.”

Demand for Sony’s industry-leading projection technology continues to be strong, with the company installing hundreds of its Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection systems monthly. Sony was the first company to introduce a digital cinema system capable of projecting ultra-high resolution “4K” images with 8.8 million pixels (4096x2160), a four-fold increase over conventional HD resolution. Sony has also shipped over a hundred F65 CineAlta™ digital motion picture cameras, capable of capturing 4K content, driving further 4K content. Sony 4K technology, in combination with forthcoming advances set to be announced next week, makes Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection systems the most advanced and future-ready digital cinema system in the world.

In the last six months, Sony has also seen a growing demand from exhibitors looking at the company to be their ‘one-stop cinema technology shop’ as they continue to modernise their operations as cost-effectively as possible, with complementary services, or technologies, scheduled to roll out at hundreds of exhibitor sites worldwide. As a result, Sony is bolstering its already extensive collection of digital cinema offerings beyond Sony 4K projection systems, with 3D; integrated software and servers; digital signage solutions with displays, controllers, and software; installation, monitoring, maintenance, content creation and distribution services; and financing programs; to now include Sony Entertainment Access Glasses and expanded services to be announced next week.
