QuVIS and ‘Still Life’: an Award Winning Combination
Company Provides 130 Digital Screenings, including Golden Lion Award Winner - a Historic First at the Venice Film Festival
QuVIS, Inc., designated the preferred provider of digital cinema mastering and playback services at the 2006 Venice Film Festival, would like to congratulate director Jia Zhang-Ke and producer Chow Keung on their feature film ‘Still Life’ for winning the festival’s coveted Golden Lion Award for the best film. ‘Still Life’, a Chinese film about ordinary people's lives set against the giant Three Gorges Dam project, was the Festival’s surprise winner – and the first Golden Lion awarded film in the Festival’s history to be presented digitally.
“Our screening was perfect, beautiful,” said producer Chow Keung. “I am very pleased with the assistance QuVIS provided us in Venice, as well as the excellent support given to us in China during the mastering process.”
‘Still Life’ was one of two offerings at the Festival from the team of Keung and Zhang-Ke. The production company turned to the Beijing Film Academy and its state-of-the-art production equipment to master both presentations. Using a QuVIS Acuity, students and faculty mastered “Dong” and the Golden Lion Award winner ‘Still Life’. The digital packages were then delivered to Lido on a hard drive, and the QuVIS site team loaded the files to a QuVIS Cinema System for multiple screenings.
The triumph of ‘Still Life’ completed a highly successful Venice Film Festival for QuVIS. Thirty-five films were digitally mastered for the 11-day marathon, with assistance from Impianti Televisivi Cinema, QuVIS’ Authorized Distributor in Italy. QuVIS Cinema Systems flawlessly provided images of unsurpassed quality for 130 screenings.
“This year’s Festival was terrific,” said Venice Film Festival Director Marco Müller. “With the increase in digital presentations, we turned to one of the most trusted pioneers in the digital cinema industry, QuVIS. Their technical expertise, along with their amazing image quality, made for a spectacular and incident-free display of the world’s finest motion picture art.”
“We are very proud to have supported ‘Still Life’ and the Venice Film Festival,” said Jim Graham, QuVIS’ VP of Sales and Marketing. “We’ve been preparing for this job for almost a year and the on-site effort was almost 30 consecutive days, non-stop. Technically, the real-time on-site mastering and multiple screenings, some simultaneous, went off without a hitch – it was a complete success. As the senior digital cinema system provider, this is a testament to the quality and reliability of our commercial grade equipment.”
QuVIS has provided the digital cinema mastering and playback systems for production companies, post houses, and theaters since 1999. QuVIS' Digital Cinema System's architecture also supports digital cinema mastering with the QuVIS Acuity and QuVIS QuStudio Digital Cinema Mastering system. Offering a simple and scaleable DCI compatible mastering platform, in addition to 2K and 4K DCP creation, the QuVIS Cinema Mastering System also offers exhibitors a complete solution for advertising and alternative content, supporting more than 50 varieties of SD and HD content.
