4K Resolution Projection Technology
"4K" is the term used to describe images that have approximately 4K vertical lines. In digital cinema, a 4K image is delivered to the theatre in a digital "container" 4096 pixels wide by 2160 pixels high. A 4K image with a 2.39:1 ("scope") aspect ratio could be supplied having 4096 x 1714 pixels. A 4K image with a 1.85:1 ("flat") aspect ratio could be supplied having 3996 x 2160 pixels.

First CineAlta-4K digital cinema installation in Germany
The CINEPLEX Münster is the first cinema in Germany to install a digital projection system with the highest resolution of 4K (4,,096 x 2,,160 pixels) demanded by the DCI specifications of the Hollywood studios. This cinema, which is one of the most successful Multiplex cinemas in Germany, will be one of the first in Europe to operate such an installation, initially on a test basis for commercial screenings.

The Curtain Rises on Sony’s New SXRD 4K Digital Cinema Projector
Sony is expanding its line-up of 4K Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRD™) digital cinema technologies with a new 18,000-lumen * projector here at ShowEast this week.
<P>Successfully demonstrated as a prototype earlier this year during industry 4K screenings of “The Da Vinci Code,” the new projector, model SRX-R220, will begin shipping to customers in early 2007. Designed for digital projection in a commercial movie theater, the projector is capable of displaying 2K and 4K content on screens 55 feet or larger. The new model joins Sony’s growing family of SXRD projectors offering exhibitors a full range of digital cinema options.</P>

4K Pure Cinema,” the world’s first field test to use the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) Digital Cinema System Specifications at the highest quality standard of 4K to test the service model of digital cinema distribution and exhibition of feature-length motion pictures has announced a significant expansion. Another major Hollywood studio and its Japanese distribution affiliate -- Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan; another major Japanese exhibitor -- Warner Mycal -- and another major network service provider -- NTT East -- will join original participants Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Warner Entertainment Japan Inc., Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone West Corporation, and Toho Co., Ltd, who began the field trials in October, 2005.

Sony and QuVIS Team to Deliver 4K Digital Cinema Projection System
At ShowEast 2005, Sony and QuVIS are announcing the availability of QuVIS'
Cinema Server, which has been developed by QuVIS to work with Sony's SXRD 4K
digital cinema projector. With Sony's SXRD projector already establishing 4K digital cinema as a technological reality, the 4K-readiness of QuVIS' Cinema Server now adds one more layer of practical reality for exhibitors, offering them the core infrastructure necessary for displaying digital motion pictures in the highest resolution and quality available.
