Emerging from Kieft & Kieft Filmtheater GmbH CineStar opened up its first multiplex cinema in 1993. Only five years later, the company based in Lübeck and managed by Marlis and Heiner Kieft contracted a joint venture with the Australian market leader Greater Union. From this time the family-owned enterprise developed to the leading operator of film theatres in Germany. Since 2004 CineStar is an independent subsidiary within the Australian Amalgamated Holdings Limited (AHL). CineStar operates 68 cinemas, including Multiplex Cinemas, Traditional Film Theatres as well as Arthouse Cinemas. This makes the CineStar Group market leader in Germany, regarding the number of locations as well as the number of screens, seats and admissions.
