The Utopia Group in its current form was created by the acquisition of a regional cinema network in Flanders (Belgium) by the Luxembourg-based company UTOPIA SA in 1999 and the merger with the Dutch group Polyfilm in 2002. It had initially been set up in 1989 by a group of cinema enthusiasts in Luxembourg. The Group currently operates 13 sites (90 screens) in the three Benelux countries and France. In 2004, Utopolis Luxembourg (10 screens) was the first European multiplex to be fully equipped for digital projection. The group operates two brands: Utopolis for mainstream and Utopia for art-house. (Utopia Group is not related to the Utopia chain operating in southern France)
