Panavision 3D System to be integrated with Sony Digital Cinema 4K Projectors

Combination will provide new customer experience options in Europe and beyond
DPVO Theatrical, LLC, a joint venture of Panavision and Omega Optical, and Sony today announced they are working on a solution that will enable Panavision 3D Systems to be compatible with Sony Digital Cinema 4K projectors.  The result is expected to broaden the customer base for both companies and provide a new high-quality option to exhibitors attracted to the box office potential of the growing number of 3D cinema titles available.

“As more exhibitors choose digital systems, they often prefer to deliver images on white screens which offer a superior entertainment experience from every seat,” said Eric Rodli, General Manager of DPVO Theatrical, LLC, the company developing and marketing the Panavision 3D System.  “Our goal is to enable exhibitors to do that – to combine ‘white screen quality’ with ‘3D excitement’ and the clarity of Sony images.  We are focusing on an approach to 3D that offers a sensible investment for today – and for tomorrow.”

“We are working together to provide an alternative that is easy on the eyes,” said David McIntosh, Director, Sony Professional Europe.  “In particular, we are moving to develop a system that can benefit small to mid-size exhibitors who want to deliver superior 4K or 3D image quality on their white or silver screens and with a relatively modest business investment. Sony is committed to listening to its customers and offering the viewing experiences they want, as digital cinema continues to gain momentum.”

The Panavision 3D System uses spectral filtration technology to ‘comb’ the spectrum, giving audiences the sensation of seeing the full spectrum in each eye, with no need for any color correction.  No polarization is required, so images can be shown on a white screen.  The Panavision 3D system for Sony Digital Cinema 4K projectors is expected towards the end of 2011 in Europe.

In addition to the expected optimized capability with Sony Digital Cinema 4K projectors, the Panavision 3D System is also compatible with digital projectors using DLP technology – as well as with projectors showing 35mm film.

“In the nine months we’ve been in the marketplace, our customers have played releases from every major studio,” Rodli said, “and our system is being handled by major dealers in the US, Canada, South America, and most European countries.  It’s the most flexible system available and the most efficient on white screens using passive glasses.”
