Belgium – Angleur—May 10, 2005

European digital cinema deployment has started!

XDC introduces the first pan-European digital cinema initiative as part of a global expansion strategy!
XDC has been selected as an Official Partner of the Cannes Film Festival 2005. It is exclusively providing all the digital technology from mastering to play-back for all digital cinema films being shown this year. This includes the CineStoreTM server infrastructure required for Star Wars Episode 3 and for Sin City. In addition, almost 20 movies have been encoded by XDC and will be screened in Cannes.

Building on its five years experience in digital cinema, the EVS Group has decided to accelerate its activities in this area and created a separately and autonomously managed company exclusively for this market. XDC benefits from exceptional structural and financial bases. Its objective: to absorb, consolidate and augment all of the business developed by EVS Digital Cinema and, in Europe in particular, beyond the sales of servers, create the first pan-European network for distribution and projection of digital cinema movies and other content and offer all related services.

XDC roll-out is on the move ! 42 additional screens have been recently equipped by XDC in Europe. Up to now, more than 100 theatres have selected XDC-EVS technology worldwide.

With almost 40 people based in Liege (Belgian HQ), XDC is a new member company of the EVS Group (www.evs-global.com). The Group has around 150 staff worldwide with major offices in Hong Kong and New-York. Along with assuming and expanding the international sales of CineStore™ digital cinema servers and all related activities, XDC is launching the first pan-European digital cinema network for distribution and projection. XDC offers full logistical services for distributors, including content preparation, delivery, quality control and archiving. A complete package solution, which does not require capital investment, is also available for European exhibitors: projector, server, installation and maintenance. It offers all the advantages of digital cinema technology.

Today, XDC is able to demonstrate success in over 100 locations around the world. A 24 by 7 Network Operations Centre will be launched shortly and will enable XDC to supervise all the connected installations and later on to receive and dispatch content via satellite.

XDC functions as an investor and finances the necessary equipment. It offers a proposition, whereby, according to the type of projector chosen for the size of screen and content presentation, exhibitors contribute between €500 and €1,500 a month. Distributors are able to use the digital network or XDC’s services for which XDC invoices from 20% to 50% less than the costs incurred for corresponding 35mm services.

In Europe, by virtue of its complete, adaptable, balanced and financed solution, XDC has received enthusiastic feedback. The first 42 screens equipped by XDC in Europe are in the Benelux, France, Spain, Switzerland and Germany. The enthusiasm in favour of XDC is impressive and a second wave of installations in excess of 100 is foreseen for the autumn of this year. This includes Italy and Sweden, which will become the number 1 country in Europe in terms of digital screens.
Beyond these concrete figures, several letters of intent have been received from Denmark, Norway, Portugal and Poland.

Furthermore, the quality of CineStore™ servers, (as of today, more than 100 servers are installed and working around the globe), has convinced several large clients or American industrial clients, who have confirmed business development opportunities, which are to be hoped for in the coming months. The Asia-Pacific area is an object of particular attention coordinated by EVS’s Hong Kong office, which is charged with customer acquisition and after-sales-services for XDC.

XDC has taken over all of the EVS Digital Cinema team and today comprises almost 40 full-time staff. XDC has set up in separate and highly secure premises, optimally configured to enable its objectives. The XDC studio includes dedicated areas for content preparation using the most up-to-date tools and technologies. These facilitate the compression, and secure storage of data, subtitling, all the different audio versions, encryption right up to secure storage of owners’ content. Furthermore, XDC has all the checking and test facilities to impose rigorous quality control before content is dispatched to cinema projection booths. This investment makes XDC the first company in Europe able to take digital content, process, transport, remote-store and deliver it right up to the projector head.
