Korea and QuVIS Provide Another Digital Cinema First
QuVIS Supplies 50 Servers as Part of the World's First Multi-Screen Deployment of JPEG2000 Servers with Network Delivery and Remote Theatre Systems for MegaBox Cineplex, Inc.
QuVIS, Inc. announces that MegaBox Cineplex Inc., Korea's premier motion picture
exhibitor, will be installing 50 QuVIS Cinema Players into Digital Cinema
theatres throughout Seoul, Korea. The QuVIS server, supporting DCI JPEG-2000
with an upgrade path to 4K, is part of a partnership project of MegaBox Cineplex
Inc. and Dong Young iTech, which will debut at the end of this year. The
installation will be the world's first multi-screen deployment of JPEG2000
servers with network delivery and remote theatre systems.
A portion of the 50 screens are in three multiplexes and include 16 in MegaBox
Cineplex Inc. COEX, 8 in the MegaBox Cineplex Inc. Mok-Dong, and 8 in MegaBox
Cineplex Inc. Shin-Chon. All of the theatres are located in Seoul. The rollout
will begin in COEX, the largest and most famous theatres in Korea.
Each Digital Cinema theatre will include a QuVIS Cinema Player and Barco DP100
or DP90 DLP 2K projector for each screen, a 100M broadband network for content
transfer and control and a separate server as the main content and delivery
Dong Young iTech (Seoul) will provide technical support, content mastering and
network delivery; Benhur Corporation Ltd (Seoul) is the integrator and mastering
consultant in this project. Jeong-Hun Ryu, managing director of MegaBox Cineplex
Inc., commented: "We are pleased to install the QuVIS technology. People coming
to our theatres are guaranteed to have an exciting experience and see the best
image and quality. We plan to be the leader in Korean Digital Cinema."
For mastering, Dong Young Studios also will have a QuVIS Acuity with content
management and distribution control systems. The QuVIS Acuity enabled Dong Young
a practical wavelet-based distribution, including both QuVIS' Quality Priority
Encoding (QPE(TM)) and the MXF packaged, encrypted DCI JPEG2000.
Mr. Shawn Kang, senior manager of Dong Young iTech added, "Our plan is to have a
digital distribution solution and content mastering system for digital cinema in
Korea and we are pleased to use QuVIS as a part of that solution."
Eun Huh, Benhur Corporation, CEO, says: "Benhur has been a long time supporter
of QuVIS and wavelet technology. We were very excited by the opportunity to lead
the digital cinema world by installing this solution in Korea."
Digital Cinema is an evolution in the way entertainment content is captured,
delivered and presented. This transformation from film to digital media enables
higher quality images to be projected while offering a significant reduction in
the cost of producing and distributing films.
Enhancements to QuVIS' already well-established leadership position include new
features for 3D, mastering, encryption, digital content management, in-theatre
tests and cinema playback -- DCI-JPEG2000 and MXF mastering and playback and a
prototype 4K player.
"QuVIS has developed technology targeted for digital cinema for over a decade.
QuVIS pioneered wavelet-based quality priority cinema systems, security,
watermarking, 2K and 4K image resolutions, 3D, subtitling, and advanced audio
capabilities for cinema applications," Kenbe Goertzen, CEO, QuVIS, said.
The QuVIS Cinema Player is part of the QuVIS Digital Cinema Solution, which
includes the QuVIS Acuity and QuVIS QuStudio for post production, mastering and
content encryption; QuVIS KeyMaster for secure distribution key management; and
QuVIS QuShow for in-theatre scheduling, either standalone, or in conjunction
with an existing system.
With MegaBox Cineplex Inc. pushing the Korean digital cinema market, QuVIS has
also provided a QuVIS Cinema Player in the Lotte World Cinema and eight more
with CGV to be installed soon.
"It has been exciting to see how quickly the Korean cinemas have moved with the
availability of DCI-JPEG 2000 servers and a complete end to end solution," James
Graham, VP of Sales and Marketing, QuVIS, said. "Deployments such as the MegaBox
Cineplex Inc. and the UKFC/Arts Alliance are helping to make the promise of
digital cinema a reality.
