CJ 4DPLEX won the Silver in Edison Award in the Media and Visual Communications – Entertainment category for 4DX, the world’s first 4D cinema experience for full feature films. It is the first time that a 4D technology-based cinema has received an Edison Award in this new category for 2015.
The award was presented at a gala event in New York City last night. The Edison Awards, which is inspired by Thomas Edison’s persistence and inventiveness, recognizes innovation, creativity and ingenuity in the global economy.
Since the first 4DX auditorium launched in 2009 at CGV Sang-am in Seoul, Korea, where the company’s headquarter is located, currently there are 170 4DX auditoriums in 33 countries including China, Mexico, United States, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and more. Every 4DX auditorium is equipped with motion chairs and multisensory environmental effects such as wind, water, air, fog, lightning, rain, and scents that work in perfect synchronicity with the action on screen.
More and more global top exhibitors are introducing 4DX as one of their premium formats as 4DX’ performance proves both bigger box office revenue and higher average seat occupancy rates than existing general movie formats. The latest movie in 4DX theatres, Furious 7, opened at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live in Los Angeles with an amazing record 98% occupancy during the first screening weekend, with Avengers: Age of Ultron in 4DX expected to also be a home run.
“We are confident that 4DX satisfies stakeholder’s needs with its state of art technology by not simply overcoming the expressional limitations that film directors and producers come across while developing a movie. But also, as new and powerful driving engine, it stimulates the cinematic industry by providing a whole new level of experience to the end user,” said Byung Hwan Choi, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX.
The award also recognizes the integration of the 4DX technology to the various sectors of the media industry not only stimulating and creating new jobs, such as, 4DX editors and software programmers, but consequently developing a new entertainment culture that will further inspire future innovation and innovators.
