REAL D Announces Addition of Digital Cinema Industry Veteran Matthew Cowan as Chief Scientific Officer
Leading Expert Joins REAL D to Shepherd in Next Generation of 3-D Advancements
REAL D, the leader in the delivery of premium 3-D
experiences, announced today that Matthew Cowan has joined the company as Chief
Scientific Officer responsible for developing next-generation 3-D technologies
for integration throughout REAL D’s product lines. Cowan has collaborated with
top scientists at REAL D for nearly two years and was instrumental in the design
and deployment of REAL D Cinema systems used for the digital 3-D presentation of
Disney’s “Chicken Little.” Cowan will report to REAL D Chief Executive Officer
Joshua Greer.
“As a scientist, Matt has made important contributions to the digital cinema
landscape throughout his career,” said Joshua Greer, Chief Executive Officer,
REAL D. “His deep understanding of the interaction between optics and human
perception has allowed REAL D to significantly advance the art and science of
digital 3D technologies.”
“REAL D has been elevating the standards in 3-D technology – and thus
challenging traditional notions of theatrical entertainment – since its
inception,” said Matthew Cowan, Chief Scientific Officer, REAL D. “I look
forward to working with the talented team at REAL D to further escalate the
company’s contributions to the industry and provide enhanced value to the
company’s partners.”
Cowan brings more than 20 years of proven success in the development and
application of new products in the media and display fields to his position at
REAL D. His successes include the development of the current mastering processes
used in digital cinema, which introduced the use of the digital mastering
theater for color and dynamic range adjustment. Cowan applied this development
to his work with leading studios where he ensured maximum image quality was
attained in the digital mastering of such movies as “Star Wars Episode 1: The
Phantom Menace.”
Cowan continues to chair the Society of Motion Picture Television Engineers
(SMPTE) working group on Stereoscopic Digital Cinema that is establishing
engineering practices and technical specifications for the rollout of digital
3-D cinema. In 2004, Cowan and co-authors were awarded SMPTE’s “Journal Award”
for the most outstanding paper, “Contrast Sensitivity Experiment to Determine
the Bit Depth for Digital Cinema.”
Cowan is an active participant in the American Society of Cinematographer’s
Advance Technology committee that examines the technologies impacting the
creation and exhibition of films.
Concurrent with his appointment at REAL D, Cowan will assume the role of technical advisor to Entertainment Technology Consultants (ETC), a consultancy he co-founded to help companies develop and introduce technologies and products to the entertainment industry.
