Cineworld / Cinema City to Bring Dolby Atmos Immersive Soundscapes to Audiences Across Europe

Up to 50 new Dolby Atmos screens planned to open in 2016 and into 2017
Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) and Cineworld / Cinema City today announced plans to bring immersive and enveloping soundscapes to audiences with up to 50 new Dolby Atmos® screens, planned for installation throughout 2016 and into 2017. The planned Dolby Atmos screens will be installed across the United Kingdom, Central, Eastern Europe (CEE) and Israel.

Dolby Atmos is an award-winning technology that breathes life into storytelling by allowing filmmakers the creative freedom to easily place and move sounds anywhere in the movie theatre, including overhead, to make audiences feel as if they are inside the world of the movie.

“The collaboration with Cineworld is an important example of the exciting momentum we are seeing with Dolby Atmos in Europe and beyond” said Andreas Spechtler, President Dolby International. “To date, Dolby Atmos has been installed or committed in over 600 screens across EMEA and more than 1800 globally. This is good news for cinema-goers in the UK, CEE and Israel, who will experience the full impact of the director’s work”.

Cineworld / Cinema City is one of the largest cinema operators in Europe, having in total 218 sites and a total of 2,011 fully digital screens, including Super Screen and VIP experience. As part of the planned collaboration, Dolby intends to install Dolby servers and audio processors in up to 100 screens across the group’s sites across Europe.

Ilan Schor, VP Technical of Cineworld Group said, “We are very happy to announce the installation of the Dolby Atmos system in several cinemas. We have no doubt that our audience will enjoy the advanced sound. Our group has been cooperating with Dolby for many years already and we are happy with the opportunity to extend the cooperation to the immersive sound, and looking forward to many more years of fruitful cooperation.”

Dolby Atmos has become the preferred choice for next-generation sound in the cinema, with major studios, award-winning filmmakers, and exhibitors from around the world embracing its approach.  To date, more than 1,800 screens worldwide have been installed or committed to be equipped with Dolby Atmos and more than 465 Dolby Atmos titles have been announced globally. For the latest list of Dolby Atmos titles, visit dolby.com/atmosmovies.

About Cineworld / Cinema City
Cineworld Group plc was founded in 1995 and is now one of the leading cinema groups in Europe. Originally a private company, it re-registered as a public company in May 2006 and listed on the London Stock Exchange in May 2007. Currently, Cineworld Group plc is the only quoted UK cinema business.

In December 2012, the Group acquired the Picturehouse chain of cinemas consisting of 21 cinemas, and in February 2014, the combination with Cinema City completed, creating the second largest cinema chain in Europe (by number of screens). The enlarged Group now has 218 sites and a total of more than 2,000 fully digital screens. Cineworld Group plc prides itself on outstanding picture quality and atmospheric surround sound; the soft, deep-down comfort of our modern seating; the crunch of its popcorn; and, most importantly, the friendliest customer service around. All its sites are digital, and it is one of the market leaders in 3D, a format which will become increasingly important.

In 2015, Cineworld accounted for 93 million admissions, had revenues of £705.8 million and an Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) before exceptional items of £155.3 million.
