59th Cannes Film Festival: solid results for XDC !

XDC is very proud to record solid results during the 59th Cannes Film Festival as Official Partner for all the digital cinema activities from encoding the movies up to the screenings in the Palais auditoria. XDC would like to thank the Festival management team and the CST for their trust in XDC services. As Official Partner of Cannes Film Festival for digital cinema, XDC was responsible for:

- 5 2K Barco DLP Cinema projectors: 4 into the renowned Lumière, Debussy, Bazin and Buñuel in Palais des Festivals theatres, and 1 into Noga Theatre for the 38th edition of the Directors’ Fortnight ;
- 5 XDC servers CineStoreTM Solo G2 MXF/MPEG2 ;
- 1 Doremi JPEG 2000 server ;
- 11 Barco DLP Standard projectors: 2 into Lumière for the screening of the guests arriving on the red carpet, 1 into Bory theatre, 3 into Palais, 3 at Gray d’Albion Hotel, 1 moving projector and finally 1 projector into Espace Miramar for the International Critics’ Week ;
- The Video Wall screening the red carpet guests.

“25 motion pictures have been presented in the Official Selection and in the parallel sections. In addition to the projections for the moviegoers, we have performed press screenings, rehearsal and quality control projections with the production teams. The total is over 60 screenings.”, said Alain Remond, General Manager of XDC France. He is also very excited that digital is so representative of the cultural diversity: “This was particularly true on Sunday 21st with the projection of 3 films in the official selection: “The Climates”, “Southland Tales” and “Over The Hedge”. In addition, a special focus was pointed on digital with the most expected screenings of “Azur et Asmar” at the Directors’ Fortnight and the restored version of “The Searchers” (Cannes Classics) or also with “Destricted” at the Critics’ Week”.

“The collaboration between the technical teams of XDC and CST was fantastic” adds Pierre-William Glenn, CST President and Technical Director of the Festival. He continues “No major problem occurred thanks to the professionalism of the 70 projectionists which received high-level digital cinema training prepared and proposed at the request of the Festival, by CST in collaboration with XDC. Their sound expertise in digital cinema meets the expectations of the so well renowned Cannes Film Festival.”

Bernard Collard, General Manager of XDC International concluded: “XDC is now, 1 and half year after its creation, the European reference for digital cinema. Our list of installed screens grows daily. More and more European and American distributors are using XDC to their motion pictures digitally. Cannes is a great opportunity to discuss current and future deals with them. We have also the possibility to show all the qualities of digital cinema to producers and distributors who want to go digital … and in optimal screening conditions.”

XDC is already preparing for 2007 which should be a fabulous 60th Festival. Finally, XDC is looking forward to the imminent release of its G3 Hybrid MPEG-2/JPEG 2000 compliant server. One of the conclusions of this edition is the comprehensive progress of digital content becoming available and diversified for the paying-audiences screen market.
