Christie Projectors to Be Used in Large-Scale Public Art Project on Exterior Walls of the Museum of Modern Art
Scharff Weisberg to Install State-of-the-Art Exhibit
Christie, a leading manufacturer of visual solutions for business, entertainment and industry, announced that its digital projectors will be used to screen Doug Aitken: Sleepwalkers, the large-scale public art project by contemporary artist Doug Aitken. The innovative film will be projected upon seven exterior facades on and around The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and surrounding buildings in New York City, January 16 through February 12, 2007.
The visual experience will feature projected images as large as 50 feet across, allowing pedestrians along West 53rd and West 54th Streets, as well as in the museum's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, to become immersed in the story of five fictional New Yorkers as they go about their daily lives.
The work will utilize three Christie Roadie 25K 3-chip DLP® projectors, purpose-built for large audience presentations where demanding lighting conditions and razor-sharp images are critical. It will also employ four Christie Roadster S+20 DLP projectors, one of the most popular, purpose-built projectors on the Rental/Staging circuit, recognized for its ruggedness and reliability. Nationwide Wholesale Video, Inc. a wholly owned company of Christie Digital Systems Inc., provided the projectors. New York City-based Scharff Weisberg, which provides state-of-the-art audio, video and lighting technology for the staging of live events, will install the projectors.
Josh Weisberg, president and partner at Scharff Weisberg notes that all outdoor projection installations present their own unique challenges. For MoMA, "We needed the brightest projectors available in the most compact design, but they also had to be hardy and highly reliable to withstand the inclement weather and extremes of temperatures typical of New York City winters," he says.
"For us, the only choice was Christie. Their projectors are perfectly suited to the needs of the market. Christie provides us not only with quality products, but also with great service and support. They are always ready to go the extra mile to deliver whatever material or technical support we need."
"Christie projectors have always played an integral role in the cultural landscape of New York City. For example, they are found at many innovative and dynamic shows on Broadway as well as countless entertainment venues throughout the city," remarks Gary Fuller, vice-president, Business Products, Christie. "We are proud to be part of MoMA's dramatic public art project with Creative Time. We appreciate Scharff Weisberg's confidence in our products and, through Nationwide, to contribute to the success of this exhibit."
