Christie Digital Cinema Projector Screens Transformers: Age of Extinction at Closing of SIFF

The 17th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) concluded in spectacular fashion with Christie®, the industry-preferred brand in the digital cinema projection market, deploying its digital cinema projector to screen the closing film on June 22, 2014.

The nine-day event captured the world’s attention with a star-studded opening ceremony and screening of the 4K-restored Chinese classic Stage Sisters using the Christie Solaria CP4230 DLP® Digital Cinema Projector on June 14. The beautifully-restored film wowed the audience with significantly improved images and fine details which were not visible previously. As the exclusive digital projection partner for the SIFF for the sixth consecutive year, Christie’s cutting edge cinema projector was once again used to screen the festival’s closing film – Transformers: The Age of Extinction. It opens nationwide in China on June 27.

Transformers: The Age of Extinction is the fourth instalment of the popular Transformers movie franchise directed by Michael Bay. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, as well as Chinese celebrities Li Bingbing, Han Geng and Wu Gang in supporting roles. Targeted at the huge Chinese movie market, the film was shot at various locations in Chongqing and Hong Kong. The plot revolves around a mechanic and his daughter who discovers a deactivated Optimus Prime, as well as a businessman and a group of scientists who attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control.

Stunning visuals from the Christie CP4230 captured the audience’s attention throughout the two-hour screening as brilliant action set pieces unfold one after another at breakneck pace. From the heart-pounding battle scene between Optimus Prime and Lockdown to sequences showing gravity-defying maneuvers by Bumble Bee and an armada of Decepticon ships wreaking havoc upon a major city, Christie’s digital cinema projector delivered superb and lifelike images for a highly immersive experience.

Lin Yu, vice president, Christie Asia Pacific, said, “We are very honored to screen the closing film of the SIFF, Transformers: The Age of Extinction, using our state-of-the-art Christie CP4230 projector to provide audiences with the ultimate visual experience. We hope that the screenings of the opening and closing films at the SIFF using our cutting edge visual solutions can help to promote the beauty of film art and further ignite interest among the public to appreciate and support the film industry in China. We also look forward to working more closely with the SIFF to further strengthen our partnership.”

The Christie Solaria Series is the only 4K DLP solution able to provide the world’s most brilliant images, the highest level of content security, the easiest adaptability, operation and maintenance. Fully DCI compliant, and built on Christie’s extensive cinema experience, the Christie CP4230 projector is ready for the next evolution of digital cinema; capable of displaying premium 4K content or 2D/3D 2K High Frame Rate (HFR) feature films and alternative content in its original format.

On June 13, Christie officially launched the world’s first permanent commercial laser projection system at the Shanghai Film Art Center. On that occasion, Christie demonstrated the advantage of laser projection vis-à-vis conventional projection systems, and conducted a special screening of the Hollywood film, Godzilla. Besides the deployment of the Christie CP4230 projector, Christie’s Solaria series of 2K and 4K digital cinema projectors were also used for screenings at SIFF’s designated cinemas such as Shanghai Cineplex and Da Guang Ming Cineplex.

Rounding up the closely-watched event was a stellar lineup of international movie celebrities who turned up for the closing ceremony red carpet. They included Academy Award winner Natalie Portman and popular Korean actress Son Tae-Yeong, who brought this year’s SIFF to a memorable close with their dazzling star power.
