Christie 2K DLP Cinema™ Projectors Installed at Entertainment Technology Center at University of Southern California

High Performance Projectors To Help Entertainment Industry Leaders Develop Digital Cinema Standards
Christie Digital Systems, Inc., a major provider of visual solutions for business, entertainment and media, today announced that two Christie CP2000 digital cinema projection systems were recently installed at the Digital Cinema Lab, a research project of the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California (ETC-USC). Among the Lab’s clients is Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), a consortium of seven Hollywood studios that is helping to develop and document an open architecture for the Digital Cinema system.

ETC-USC is a stand-alone research unit at the University of Southern California that is devoted to studying the impact of new technology on all aspects of the entertainment industry. The Center’s Digital Cinema Laboratory examines digital moving image acquisition, distribution and exhibition. Christie installed two Christie CP2000 digital cinema projection systems at the Laboratory, which is located at the historic Hollywood Pacific Theater, to offer access to leading edge digital cinema technology in an authentic theater setting.

“The Entertainment Technology Center was founded as a neutral environment where leading edge people and companies can identify, evaluate and develop innovative solutions for the industry that also enhance the theatergoing experience for the general public,” said Charles S. Swartz, executive director and CEO of ETC-USC. “The Christie CP2000, based on Texas Instruments’ 2K-resolution DLP Cinema (tm) technology, offers a high level of performance, accuracy and quality and we are pleased that it is available for our research efforts at the Lab.”

The Christie CP2000 was recently used to screen the cinematic hit, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” drawing enthusiastic response for its vivid imagery and industry-leading 2K resolution. The vibrant and sharp theatrical digital image far exceeded everyone’s expectations for quality and brightness. Since then, in addition to testing conducted by the consortium, major post-production houses and Hollywood studios routinely use the projector to screen digital content and features.

“The Christie CP2000 projector offers the highest level of resolution, contrast ratio and brightness available on the market today,” remarked Craig Sholder, senior director, business development and cinema sales, Christie. “We are very pleased that it will play such an important role at the ETC-USC.”
