Cineplexx Raises the Stakes By Bringing Dolby Cinema to Cineplexx Salzburg Airport
A five million Euro investment: Salzburg opens new high-end cinema featuring a Dolby Cinema auditorium with 3D laser projection
Cineplexx, the biggest cinema exhibitor in Austria is once again raising the stakes of cinema technology by opening a new Dolby Cinema in Salzburg. This brings the Dolby VisionTM laser projector combined with Dolby Atmos® sound and inspiring design to Salzburg for the first time. After approximately eleven weeks of renovation, the cinema, which is located near the Salzburg airport, will be opened on June 29th with a premiere of the movie “Ice Age: Collision Course”.
The newly constructed Dolby Cinema auditorium will serve as the centrepiece of Cineplexx Salzburg Airport, and is the second high-end cinema of its kind in the German speaking territory, complementing the Dolby Cinema site in Linz that opening in November 2015.
“With the modernisation of the Cineplexx Salzburg Airport and the introduction of the Dolby Cinema auditorium, we are bringing the future of cinema to Salzburg. Our audience can look forward to spectacular technology that will guarantee a completely novel and exciting movie experience”, said Christian Langhammer, managing partner of Cineplexx.
From sound system to leather seat: Everything new in the Airport Cinema
More than 100 people were tasked with the cinema’s modernisation. All auditoriums were completely renovated, the entrance hall was redesigned and the entire interior was enhanced with stylish décor elements and a lounge area. In addition to the Dolby Cinema auditorium, two more rooms were equipped with the immersive surround sound technology Dolby Atmos and luxurious Cinegold leather seats. The ticket, food and beverage counters and washrooms were also remodelled. “The Salzburg Airport Cinema is one of our prime locations. We are very excited that we can offer our visitors not only the best technology, but also a modern cinema atmosphere”, said Langhammer.
Dolby Cinema: Laser-projecting into a new era of cinema
The opening of the new Dolby Cinema auditorium marks the beginning of a new era for the Cineplexx Salzburg: movie lovers and film connoisseurs can look forward to a unique cinema experience.
“We are very happy to partner with Cineplexx and open the second Dolby Cinema in Austria. Cineplexx has proved once again that it is a pioneer when it comes to adopting the next generation of cinema technology”, said Andreas Spechtler, president of Dolby International.
The combination of the state-of-the-art image playback technology that is Dolby Vision double laser projection, and realistic Dolby Atmos sound allows movie goers at Dolby Cinemas to feel at the centre of the action and have a truly immersive experience. The atmosphere is set even before the movie-goers enter the room, in the so-called ‘prelude’, the hyper modern entrance area where images are projected onto the walls to create the perfect mood. In the auditorium the audience is greeted by velvety black walls that span around the entire room like a cocoon. The Dolby Cinema auditorium is fashioned completely in black, including all of the seats and the floor. Not only does this focus the audience’s attention on the screen, it also enhances the brilliant color contrasts provided by the Dolby Vision technology. Starting mid-July, the Dolby Cinema will feature its next big blockbuster with Independence Day: Resurgence.

About Constantin Film Holding GmbH:
The film distributor Constantin Film Holding GmbH was founded in Austria in 1951. A second mainstay was created at the end of the 1960's in the segment of cine operations. In this segment, 25 traditional cinemas and cinema centres were operated until the beginning of the 1990's and, following a structural change, the Cineplexx Cine Operations GmbH, a subsidiary company of the Constantin Film Holding GmbH, was founded in 1993. The business developed during a time when many traditional cinemas in Austria were disappearing and multiplex movie theatres were conquering the market. Constantin Film reacted to this trend by establishing a group of 20 cinemas and 157 screens in Austria. Additionally, traditional movie theatres with up to 16 halls existed.
In 2009, the Cineplexx INTERNATIONAL GmbH started expanding to Austria's neighbouring countries and the first cinema outside Austria was opened in Bolzano, South Tyrol. Cineplexx also took over a cinema in Zagreb's city centre, thus laying the foundation for expansion into Croatia. Further Cineplexx cinemas followed in 2011 and 2012 in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia. In 2013 Cineplexx established five multiplex movie theatres in Slovenia and the first seven-hall cinema in Albania. The last expansion took place in spring 2014 with the opening of a multiplex cinema in Usce, Serbia.
Today, Cineplexx has a strong market presence with 40 multiplex and six traditional locations in Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania and Italy, offering 291 halls. In 2014, the company's working force included 1,200 employees, the overall turnover amounted to 120 million euros and the number of Cineplexx visitors reached 10.5 million.
