Malco Theatres Embraces the Future of Cinema by Bringing Dolby Digital Cinema to Theatres Today

Malco Theatres, one of the leading independent exhibitors in the US, announced today that it is making digital cinema a reality by deploying Dolby® Digital Cinema in theatres. As its first step in a long-term digital cinema rollout strategy, Malco Theatres has successfully installed 11 screens with Dolby Digital Cinema systems in three of its leading theatres.

"We are embracing digital cinema early to be better prepared for the inevitable change in the industry," said Mike Thomson, Vice President Operations & Technology, Malco Theatres. "As we embark on this major transition, it is critical to work with a vendor that provides technology that can stand the test of time. Due to our long-standing relationship with Dolby, we have built a foundation of trust for their products and services. We know that Dolby will be here to help us today and tomorrow."

Malco Theatres installed five digital cinema systems in its Grandview Cinema in Madison, Mississippi, one system in its Paradiso Theatre in Memphis, Tennessee, and five systems at the Malco Towne Cinema in Rogers, Arkansas. Over the past six months, Malco has presented more than ten movies digitally including presentations of The Ant Bully, Monster House, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Thomson added, "Dolby Digital Cinema has been running in our theatres for the past six months, and we have been impressed with the level of reliability and ease of use the system provides our theatres. Dolby Digital Cinema has performed beyond expectations and we are very pleased to continue working with Dolby to bring digital cinema to more of our screens."

"We commend Malco Theatres for its commitment to digital cinema," said Tim Partridge, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Professional Division, Dolby Laboratories. "Malco has already seen immediate benefits from Dolby Digital Cinema, and we are dedicated to providing them with the highest level of service and technology to guide them through their transition to digital."

The Dolby Digital Cinema system is specifically engineered for real-world cinema installations and offers superb picture quality, reliability, and user-friendly operation. To date, more than 50 digital movies have been presented on more than 175 screens using Dolby Digital Cinema. Recent and current presentations in select locations around the world include Cars, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Monster House, Invincible, and Superman Returns.
