T-Systems sets up the first Europe-wide distribution network for digital cinema

Cooperation with ASTRA makes satellite broadcasting possible
T-Systems and SES ASTRA have sealed a cooperation for the distribution of digital movies via ASTRA satellites. The business customer division of Deutsche Telekom is creating the first Europe-wide distribution network for digital cinema. The complete service spectrum offered by T-Systems includes the broadcasting, storage and administration of digital movies. The electronic distribution of these movies is less expensive than reproduction and shipment of celluloid film. Additionally, movies arrive at all movie theaters at the same time, allowing movie buffs to view film premiers of the latest blockbusters even at small cinemas.

"SES ASTRA is a driving force for digitalization and can fully exploit the benefits of satellite transmission for film distribution to cinemas," said Thomas Wrede, Vice President Product Management of SES ASTRA. "Together with T-Systems, we can offer the cinema and media industries a working system for the efficient distribution of digital movies Europe-wide. For us, the cooperation with T-Systems is an additional step in expanding the use of our orbital position 23.5° East to include new media, content on demand and other innovative services."

"The adoption of digital cinema specifications by the Hollywood Studios now means a high degree of investment security for all parties involved," said Timo von Lepel, board member of the T-Systems business unit Me-dia&Broadcast. von Lepel adds: "Thanks to the cooperation with SES ASTRA, we're now able to set up a distribution platform that meets all the demands of digital cinema. The entire spectrum of services is available beginning immediately.

T-Systems not only offers a complete package for digital cinema but also offers individual components, such as the server-based cinema in-house solution "Feature Film DC." The software tool enables a projectionist to configure movies, trailers and commercials on a computer and assign them to the different theaters at the cinema. The solution meets the specifications of the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI).
