zweib and Rohde & Schwarz Generate Digital Cinema Packages at Filmfest München

Broadcast and media specialist Rohde & Schwarz and cinema technology and postproduction specialist zweiB GmbH collaborate once again at the 35th international Munich film festival. The companies will use the R&S CLIPSTER mastering solution to create and validate digital cinema packages during the festival.

Rohde & Schwarz GmbH & Co. KG and zweiB GmbH use R&S CLIPSTER workstations to support the FILMFEST MÜNCHEN, which takes place June 22 to July 1, 2017. The majority of films are delivered as digital cinema packages (DCP), but in a large qualitative bandwidth. For this reason, R&S CLIPSTER is used to check the delivered files and to record metadata before Germany's largest summer film festival starts. This process ensures that the correct picture and sound will be transmitted to viewers in the cinema. Another R&S CLIPSTER is used as a backup as well as to bridge bottlenecks and speed up the workflow.

Some films are submitted in other formats, such as ProRes files on hard disks, SSDs and memory sticks or DNxHD files and XDCAM files on various storage media. It is even still possible to submit tapes on HDCAM-SR cassettes. In this case, the mastering solution with its variety of formats, flexibility and reliability offers considerable advantages. Since it supports a variety of formats, already digitized films can be quickly converted and processed. R&S CLIPSTER also generates high-quality DCPs – efficiently and faster than in real time. Thanks to the preview function and DCI validation tools, the user can immediately see the finished DCPs as well as check quality and conformance with DCI standards. In addition to mastering and quality assurance, the workstation is also used to repair DCPs.

The FILMFEST MÜNCHEN was first held in 1983. It is the second largest film festival in Germany (right behind the Berlin Film Festival) with around 80,000 visitors and 460 shows. Every year more than 2000 German and international media professionals from the film, television and video industry as well as more than 500 journalists are accredited. For nine days at the end of June, the festival presents around 200 of the best feature and documentary films from all over the world as an international, European or German premiere.

Diana Iljine, Festival Director of FILMFEST MÜNCHEN: "zweiB and Rohde & Schwarz are strong partners for us. Thanks to their know-how and experience, we master the technical challenges of digital cinema so that the FILMFEST MÜNCHEN is also technologically up to date."

Tammo Buhren, CEO at zweiB: "R&S CLIPSTER features considerable flexibility and openness and integrates perfectly into numerous workflows. The workstation is always up to date with the latest standards. We use it in the run-up to the festival in order to deliver flawless and timely DCP mastering.”

André Vent, Sales Manager Rohde & Schwarz Vertriebs-GmbH: "zweiB has been using our products successfully for years to implement impressive projects. That's why we're especially pleased to work with them as partners of the Munich film festival."
