Unique Digital selected to digitise Swedish cinemas for advertising network

Contract with SF Media makes Unique world's largest independent digital screen ad operator
Unique Digital Ltd. has won the contract to build and operate the digital screen advertising network for Sweden's SF Media, the largest cinema advertising company in the Nordic region. The deal was announced after an 18-month long evaluation of different digital advertising solution systems and providers, which was aimed at selecting the most advanced technical solution available. Unique's system will replace 35mm advertising in the cinemas that are part of SF Media's country-wide exhibitor partnership, with the entire digital network in operation by early 2007. Unique Digital is installing digital advertising in a total of 426 cinema screens. Together with its other installations across Europe the new deployment will make Unique Digital the world's largest independent digital screen advertising operator.

“We are very proud to have been selected by SF Media after what was a long and fiercely contested selection process,” comments Dave Spilde, Director of Technology of Unique Digital. The digital screen advertising solution by Unique chosen by SF Media is already implemented in Norway (by CAPA), UK and Ireland (by Carlton Screen Advertising), as well as Belgium and Portugal (by Screenvision Europe). “SF Media and SF Bio have a long history of being technically forward thinking and the solution we will be launching together anticipates the coming transition to digital cinema for feature films,” Spilde confirmed. “The system promises to be the most advanced in all of Europe, if not the world,” he added.

Commenting on behalf of SF Media, the company's CEO David Bonnier said that “we believe that cinema remains the most powerful medium for advertising and that going digital will enable us to make this an even stronger and targeted proposition.” He added that, “we see the opportunity to broaden the proposition to our clients, large as well as small, and to create the best possible experience for the movie going public with Unique's solution.” Bonnier confirmed that, “during the next 12 months we will launch several innovative digital platforms both on the screen and on other locations inside the cinemas.”

One of the reasons for SF Media's selection of the system developed by Unique Digital is that it was the first to full fill the specifications and recommendations set out for digital screen advertising by SAWA (Screen Advertising World Association), the global trade body for cinema advertising companies. “We feel that cinema goers deserve the best presentation that is technically possible today, whether for film or advertising,” Bonnier affirmed.

The Unique Digital-SF Media system will distribute and screen adverts in true high definition (1,920 x 1,080) picture format that exceeds that of consumer HDTV, using projectors from Projection Design, with digital uncompressed 5.1 sound. Advertising campaigns will be booked centrally and distributed over an advanced broadband platform using 'swarm' networking coupled with Unique Digital's IQ Accord software solution that was specifically designed to meet the needs of the cinema advertising industry. It will also play on all of SF Bio's future digital cinema installations.
