GDC Digital Cinema Servers to Deliver Dolby Atmos Playback

GDC Tech among the first third-party manufacturers to adopt revolutionary new sound format
Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) announced today that GDC Technology (“GDC Tech”), a world-leading digital cinema solutions provider, will be among the first third-party manufacturers licensed to incorporate Dolby® Atmos™ playback into its servers. Dolby’s new audio platform continues to receive widespread support from the cinema industry, including major studios, award-winning directors and sound teams, and now GDC Tech, bringing the power of Dolby Atmos to more audiences around the world.

“By enabling Dolby Atmos playback in GDC servers, our customers can deliver a premium entertainment experience to their patrons and be at the forefront of innovation,” said Pranay Kumar, Chief Technology Officer, GDC Tech.

“Dolby Atmos was designed for interoperability, so third-party manufacturers like GDC Tech can enable a sound experience way beyond 5.1, 7.1, or 11.1 channels,” said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema, Dolby Laboratories. “We are very pleased with the support we are getting for Dolby Atmos from all corners of the industry. Together we will raise the bar on the cinema experience and make movie audiences feel as if they are in the movie, not just watching it.”

A software update is expected to be made available this September for GDC Tech servers to enable Dolby Atmos playback. Once updated, the GDC server will be able to take Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers Digital Cinema Packages (SMPTE DCPs) containing Dolby Atmos soundtracks and play them back with the Dolby Atmos Cinema Processor CP850.

Exhibitors interested in the upgrade should contact GDC Tech or their local dealer. Current Dolby CP850 customers can get the software update by contacting GDC Tech.

About Dolby Atmos
Dolby Laboratories is equipping the cinema world with its new Dolby Atmos technology. Dolby Atmos unleashes the potential of sound in storytelling by providing filmmakers the creative freedom to easily place or move specific sounds anywhere in the movie theatre, not just where there happen to be speakers. The result is what moviegoers have described as the most engaging and lifelike cinema experience ever.

Introduced in April 2012, Dolby Atmos has been embraced by all the major Hollywood studios, six Academy Award® winning directors, and 10 Academy Award winning sound mixers, among others. More than 250 Dolby Atmos screens have been installed or committed to in 27 countries with more than 85 exhibitor partners. More than 70 films from ten different countries—representing a broad range of genres, from action thrillers and animated features, to comedy and horror—have been or are scheduled to be released with Dolby Atmos sound since the first film debuted in June 2012. Dolby Atmos has received technical achievement awards from both the Hollywood Post Alliance and the Cinema Audio Society.
