DELUXE / ARRI Film & TV Services GmbH—UPDATE—Electronic Delivery of movies

Early In 2012 Deluxe and ARRI Film & TV Services GmbH concluded an agreement for ARRI to deliver digital cinema content via hard-drives for cinemas in the German Speaking area (GSA). The cooperation has proved very successful. For Deluxe’s various Hollywood partners ARRI provides cinemas in the GSA with US and international titles. ARRI also directly services many other distributors’ movies and, on behalf of the regional offices of the US Majors, many German and independent films they acquire and distribute, of which ARRI is often a co-producer.

For over two years both Deluxe and ARRI have been examining and testing a variety of electronic channels for content delivery. With its systems integration partner, Hewlett Packard (HP), Deluxe has developed and successfully launched its open-access, point-to-point digital delivery network—Deluxe Connect—in France, Denmark, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The network is quickly expanding across Europe and has already successfully delivered nearly 1,000 feature films via this system. At the same time, ARRI has combined its delivery and support services into its Content Delivery Network (CDN)—a series of tools and content management software and services designed to make life simple and economical for producers, distributors and cinemas alike.

German organisations representing distributors, art-house and multi-screen houses and individual cinemas have welcomed this project. After several field tests to ascertain line capacities, a group of these cinemas has been selected by ARRI to use Deluxe Connect in a series of trials that will help define optimal workflows for content delivery into the GSA for the years to come. ARRI and Deluxe are coordinating the installation and offering connectivity and the hardware at no cost to cinema owners. Furthermore, whether delivered by electronic or physical means, distributors can be assured of a reliable and efficient service. It is anticipated that all cinemas will soon benefit from a full-scale implementation. This is a key market and with strong connectivity and a healthy demand for content, ARRI and Deluxe are well placed to support full migration to electronic delivery in this territory.

“At ARRI, we believe that the versatile and mature system architecture, which Deluxe and HP have developed, better supports the special market conditions that prevail in our markets than any of the several electronic systems we have examined and tested,” said ARRI’s Harald Schernthaner - Head of Innovation & Development . “Like ARRI, Deluxe has been part of the motion picture industry for around 100 years, and Deluxe’s cultural appreciation of the demands of getting content from post-production to screen match ours entirely.”

Mark Burton, Deluxe’s Managing Director said, “Our work with ARRI and ARRI’s innate industry understanding and profound technical and market knowledge means that Deluxe Connect can be competently and efficiently dovetailed into the needs of the German-Speaking market.”

HP, the world-leading systems integration and technology solutions leader is ensuring that the network infrastructure it is building on behalf of Deluxe is capable of both providing a robust service today and sufficient resources and power to accommodate the needs of tomorrow, including integrated systems for alternative content streaming.

ARRI Film & TV Services GmbH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the ARRI Group, a privately owned and Oscar-winning motion picture technology company renowned for its cinematographic, post-production and lighting systems and services.
