Digital Cinema Veteran Frank Stirling Joins Panorama Labs

Former Boeing Executive to Direct Projector Development and Commercialization
Panorama Labs, the company pioneering magneto-photonic crystal technology, announced today that Frank Stirling has been named president of its Digital Cinema strategic business unit. Effective immediately, Stirling is responsible for managing day-to-day operations, including overseeing development of a digital cinema projector for theatrical exhibition. He will be based in Los Angeles.

“The capabilities of existing digital cinema technologies will be quickly outpaced by the demands of moviegoers, exhibitors and studios. I joined Panorama Labs because they have a real solution,” said Stirling. “Panorama Labs' magneto-photonics technology is being developed to solve the problems facing digital cinema by delivering brighter images, more accurate color and higher resolution than other methods can achieve, and just as importantly, do so at significantly lower cost.”

Stirling brings impressive digital cinema experience to Panorama Labs. Most notably, he was executive director of Boeing Digital Cinema, an enterprise started in 2000, where he deployed 31 operational theater screens across the United States and in London. Immediately prior to joining Panorama Labs, Stirling was founder and CEO of Stirling Media, a company dedicated to support the conversion of theatrical exhibition to digital technology.

Earlier, Stirling was responsible for engineering, technical operations and business development for government and private industry clients while an assistant vice president at SAIC; he also directed the development of a new business for an aeronautical navigation and communication service at Hughes Space and Communications Company, and he specialized in strategic planning and program/product development services for the aerospace industry as president of a Washington D.C. consulting firm.

Stirling’s technical career began in the United States Air Force, where he directed a surveillance satellite development program for strategic defense, as well as the $30 billion space launch vehicle program Titan IV. In this career, Stirling developed numerous new systems involving new technologies, including the multi-billion-dollar Centaur Upper Stage and the Titan Solid Rocket Motor Upgrade. He achieved the rank of Colonel while on active duty. He also served as Director of Secure Networks for Homeland Security, planning the development of the nation’s Integrated Wireless Network.

Stirling holds an MBA in Research and Development and a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California. He is also a graduate of the prestigious Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the National War College, and the Defense Systems Management College. He served as a professor of Astronautics at the U.S. Air Force Academy and at USC in Systems Engineering.

“Frank brings a tremendous amount of value to Panorama Labs,” said Panorama Labs Founder and CSO Sutherland Ellwood. “With his technical knowledge of digital cinema, his experience in developing, managing and commercializing breakthrough technologies, and his relationships with film studios and theater operators, Frank is a perfect fit for the company and will help Panorama Labs quickly move to the next stage in its evolution.”
