Digital Cinema Legend, Walter Ordway, Joins Panorama Labs Advisory Board

Panorama Labs, the company pioneering magneto-photonic crystal technology, announced today that Walter Ordway, who “just might be the man who invented digital cinema” according to Variety, has joined the company’s advisory board. He will provide expert guidance to the company’s Panorama Entertainment Systems division in all aspects of its operations, from development of its digital cinema 4K MOD projector technology to business strategy and product rollout.

“I’m a strong supporter of all efforts that will positively impact the digital cinema conversion,” said Ordway. “I believe that the promise of Panorama Labs’ technology will greatly improve the industry and am happy to assist in making that happen.”

Ordway is held in high esteem in both the theatrical exhibition and motion picture industries. In 2006 he was honored with the Inter-Society Ken Mason award and a ShoWest Digital Cinema Pioneer Award.

Most recently, Ordway served as chief technology officer for Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI). DCI was formed by the seven major Hollywood studios (Disney, Fox, MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal, and Warner Brothers) to create a specification that could be used to set a common format for digital cinema content and systems.

Prior to that, he served the Hughes Aircraft Company for 30 years in various capacities, most notably doing a preliminary analysis in 1993 of the potential digital cinema business opportunity for Hughes, and as a vice president in the engineering group of Hughes DirecTV. After retiring from Hughes in 1997, Ordway was asked, in 2000, to head up DC28.4, a SMPTE group tasked to create the Security requirements documents for standards in digital cinema.

“Walt is someone I and the rest of the executive team at Panorama Labs have great respect and admiration for, and we are truly honored to have direct input from someone so knowledgeable and passionate about digital cinema.” said Sutherland Ellwood, chief strategic officer and founder of Panorama Labs.
