Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger Debut with Dolby Surround 7.1

Dolby Surround 7.1 passes 20th title milestone in first year
Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB), Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom, Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B) and Marvel Entertainment, LLC announced today that both 2D and 3D formats of Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger are being released globally in Dolby® Surround 7.1.

“Marvel Studios’ Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger deliver unforgettable sequences that will draw audiences into the story with rich visual effects and Dolby Surround 7.1 will compliment these elements in an epic way,” said Victoria Alonso, EVP of Visual Effects and Post at Marvel Studios. “So whether you are swooping over the lands of Asgard in Thor or in a World War II battle scene in Captain America:The First Avenger, audiences will feel more a part of the action with Dolby Surround 7.1.”

The latest innovation from a pioneer in cinema sound, Dolby Surround 7.1 improves the spatial dimension of soundtracks and enhances audio definition, resulting in full-featured audio that better matches the visual impact of movies.

“Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The First Avenger becomes the twenty-first 7.1 feature film to be announced, making Dolby Surround 7.1 one of the fastest cinema audio formats ever adopted in Dolby’s history,”  said Robin Selden, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Dolby Laboratories. “We are thrilled that Hollywood, exhibitors, and content creators around the world have embraced Dolby Surround 7.1 to help enrich the moviegoing experience for consumers.”

Thor, released on May 6, 2011, and Captain America: The First Avenger, scheduled for July 22, 2011, are being released in select Dolby Surround 7.1 theaters across North America with International regions to follow.

About Dolby Surround 7.1
With the ability for content creators to mix in a discrete 7.1 format, Dolby Surround 7.1 provides four surround zones to better orchestrate audio channels in a movie theater environment. The four surround zones incorporate the traditional Left Surround and Right Surround with new Back Surround Left and Back Surround Right zones. The addition of the two Back Surround zones enhances directionality in panning 360 degrees around the theater.

Dolby Surround 7.1 format comprises eight channels of audio and has the following channel layout: Left, Center, Right, Low-Frequency Effects (LFE), Left Surround, Right Surround, Back Surround Left, and Back Surround Right.

Currently there are over 1,400 screens equipped with Dolby Surround 7.1. Global Dolby Surround 7.1 locations are listed at www.dolby.com/consumer/product/movies/theater/find-a-cinema.html.
