Microspace Communications Corporation (Microspace), the operator of the largest
business satellite broadcast network in the world, and Entertainment Technology
Consultants (ETC), leading authorities in entertainment presentation quality, announced
today that ETC will assist Microspace in producing a demonstration of its satellite
service, VELOCITY®, for the digital cinema industry. The event will be held October
28 at the Digital Cinema Lab, a unit of the Entertainment Technology Center at the
University of Southern California.
ETC will produce and coordinate Microspace's Hollywood premiere for this invitation-only
event. Microspace will demonstrate its services by transferring movie clips from
its network operations center in Raleigh, North Carolina to the Digital Cinema Lab
in Hollywood, California.
“Entertainment Technology Consultants are recognized in the entertainment industry
as the leading experts in the digital cinema market, so using their services in
VELOCITY’s Hollywood debut was a must,” said Sam Matheny, Manager of Digital Cinema
Development at Microspace. “This industry has a need to move large amounts of audio,
video and data content simultaneously, something that satellite can do both reliably
and affordably.”
Matheny has presented at the National Associations of Broadcasters’ Digital Cinema
Summit on the topic of moving multimedia content to thousands of locations. He also
coordinated Microspace’s donation of a complete satellite network package to the
Digital Cinema Lab in May. This system has been distributing both live and stored
content to the Lab on a test basis since it was installed. Microspace is also a
member of the International Theatre Equipment Association (ITEA), SMPTE’s DC 28
Committee and has provided feedback to the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI), a consortium
of the seven major studios, on specifications for digital cinema standards.
“We are pleased that Microspace has selected ETC as a strategic partner for their
Hollywood outreach,” said Loren Nielsen, co-founder of ETC. “Microspace’s more than
15 years of experience in the delivery of time-critical content to thousands of
locations is a valuable asset that can help enable cost-effective delivery of movies
to digital cinema theatres worldwide.”
Microspace introduced the VELOCITY system in 1996 to serve the business-to-business
market and has been evolving the system's delivery capabilities to meet industry
needs. The service rapidly transports both video imagery and data with no resolution
limits.
