Dolby Digital Sound Enables Exclusive Live Presentations of Genesis in Concert at Vue Cinemas
Dolby supports end-to-end audio production for live event in cinemas across UK
Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) announced today that it is working with international multi-platinum band Genesis and cinema operator Vue Entertainment to enable exclusive live surround sound in HD presentations of the band’s much anticipated European tour in cinemas around the UK. The June 27 concert in Düsseldorf, Germany will be beamed live to the UK with stunning high-definition pictures complete with Dolby® Digital 5.1 surround sound. Genesis fans will have the special opportunity to experience the concert on 40 Vue screens, 10 days before the first UK dates of the tour.
“With this collaboration, Vue Entertainment can present our customers with an exciting live experience. Dolby’s support and contribution is invaluable to this presentation. Their ability and experience allows us to capture and transmit stunning surround sound as it is happening to our cinema customers. With the high-definition pictures and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, our customers will feel like they are right there in the crowd at the LTU Arena,” said Mark de Quervain, Marketing Director for Vue Entertainment.
In support of the complex, real-time production at the concert location in Düsseldorf, Dolby will provide on-site engineering support and encoding equipment. Backstage, Dolby engineers will work with the concert crew to specially configure a mobile recording studio to capture the nuances of the live performance. The resulting Dolby Digital surround soundtrack will then be added to the HD pictures and sent via satellite link.
In the UK, the concert will be presented in HD and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound on all 40 screens, enabling an authentic experience in every location. Each Vue cinema will use a Dolby DMA8 or DMA8Plus Digital Media Adapter to decode the live soundtrack and interface it to the existing surround sound system.
“Dolby’s years of experience working with both cinema and broadcast—from production to distribution to exhibition—underscores our unique position to provide the right combination of on-site, technical, and engineering services to this live event,” said Jason Power, Director, Market Development, Dolby Laboratories. “We are excited and pleased to play such an integral role in the presentation of this prestigious event.”
