Avica Technology Provides Sensible Solution to Digital Cinema Theater Conversion

Avica Technology introduced its new Multiplex Solution Digital Cinema Servers at ShoWest in Las Vegas.

The FilmStoreTM product line is the first of its kind-an entire line of servers built expressly for Digital Cinema applications. The product line consists of three Avica FilmStore server models, each delivering Avica's flexible, solution-focused software technology and user interface components running on highly reliable Dell Computer server hardware.

The Avica Multiplex FilmStore system is comprised of a central storage and management system, the A2900, and any number of low-cost Avica A550 Cache Servers. Content is simply loaded into the central storage system over network connections (VPN, Broadband or Satellite) or by DVD, then disseminated to individual A550 Multiplex Cache Servers over a secure, local Gigabit network for storage and playout. A500 stand-alone servers can also be incorporated into the Multiplex system. Multiplex FilmStore's central server design offers both a compelling per-screen price point and a wide array of centralized management controls to facilitate distribution within a theater complex.

The A550 Multiplex Cache Server is designed to provide the ideal low-cost solution for single screen performances in large multiplexes. With the ability to utilize a networked central storage system, it provides both standalone playback capability and enhanced auditorium utilization in a networked multiplex environment. Additional A550 Cache Servers can be added at any time, offering exhibitors unparalleled flexibility, performance and theater management tools in a low-cost per screen package.

The A500 FilmStore is a rugged two rack-space stand-alone server designed for motion picture delivery to a single Digital Cinema projector. With hardware built for demanding commercial applications, the A500 offers fail-safe features including redundant power supplies, RAID-10 fully redundant disk array with hot swap spare, system monitoring and key-locked tamper-resistant enclosure.

Avica's unique "platform approach" to Digital Cinema server design includes the industry's most comprehensive compatibility with other products in the digital exhibition chain. FilmStore offers an extensive array of management and control interfaces, a logical upgrade path for multiplex environments, and an open architecture that easily accommodates evolving compression and encryption technologies. "From a playback server perspective, FilmStore offers a unique combination of features and reliability," explains Andrew Maltz, Avica President and CEO. "And now, Multiplex FilmStore offers a single point of control for theater management that is expandable, cost effective, and builds on FilmStore's original, elegant user interface. Multiplex theaters can convert screens on their own timetable, without financial penalty and without having to retrain staff or become accustomed to increasingly more complex interfaces as the number of Digital Cinema screens expand. The theatrical exhibition industry's concerns have been key requirements in our design process, and we believe that Multiplex FilmStore brings together the rare combination of easy integration, improved management control and extraordinary reliability, all in an economically sensible way that delivers the best possible product to our customers."

All FilmStore models integrate advanced software technologies and a unique design approach allowing them to easily interface to existing theatre automation, ticketing and business systems. The Avica Platform for Digital Cinema includes the FilmStore Digital Cinema Player and is the industry's only line-up of theater players, servers and management tools based on an open system architecture and designed specifically for Digital Cinema applications. All models support content load-in from satellite, broadband connections or physical media and Avica's unique user interface allows local or remote control, via network or WAN connection, of one or multiple more FilmStores within a theatre complex. Avica's FilmStore Digital Cinema Manager and Digital Cinema Player software allow monitoring of available media, playlist generation, and centralized theater management and control for all screens.
