Bowie Live Concert to Be Broadcast in DTS Digital Surround® to Cinemas Via DVB

DTS Facilitates Exclusive Surround Sound Broadcast for Major Digital Cinema Event Across Europe and North America
The latest developments in DTS (Nasdaq: DTSI) digital broadcast and digital cinema technology will be united in a unique 5.1 surround sound transmission of a live concert by David Bowie, from the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, to cinemas across Europe and North America. Broadcast live in 5.1-channel DTS 96/24 digital surround sound on 8 September in London, Paris, Munich and Zurich – and re-broadcast on 15 September in the US and Canada – the event will uniquely demonstrate DTS’ end-to-end solution for alternative E-cinema programming, by delivering the highest possible audio quality available.

DTS will be encoding the multi-channel audio feed at the concert venue, using its CAE-5 professional broadcast encoder. The DTS encoded signal will be fed to TANDBERG MPEG2 encoding equipment for global satellite delivery coordinated by leading live cinema events organiser Quantum Digital, together with a consortium of technology partners around the world. The signal received at the designated cinema sites, using TANDBERG Integrated Receiver Decoder devices, will be fed to DTS’ new XD10 Digital Cinema Media player, which will output the 96kHz 24 bit-quality surround sound audio.

Ted Laverty, DTS director of business development for broadcast, comments, “We were approached with the aim of delivering the highest possible audio quality for the digital broadcast of this concert at prime sites in Europe and North America. Based on a number of convergent developments, including recent initiatives with the DVB, Swedish Radio’s surround sound broadcast and the launch of our XD10 Cinema Media Player, we can offer a fully-integrated engineering solution.”

Produced by Sony Music and digitally delivered globally by the UK-based Quantum Digital Network, this broadcast event will mark the launch of David Bowie’s new album, Reality, which will be released 15 September on Iso / Columbia Records. The 90-minute show will be broadcast simultaneously to cinemas via satellite. Cinemas presenting the broadcast in DTS Digital Surround® in Europe include Odeon West End in London, CinemaxX in Munich, Cinemax in Zurich and MK2 in Paris.

Marc John from Quantum Digital (www.quantumdigital.co.uk), also head of Digital Cinema at the UK Odeon cinema chain, said “DTS are taking digital 5.1 audio quality in cinemas to a new height, and their level of expertise and logistical support must be unrivaled. At these select cinemas you will hear the future.”

About DTS XD10
Engineered to deliver up to 10 channels of scalable digital surround sound (expandable to 16 channels), the XD10 is an expandable media solution for pre-show and feature film presentation. The XD10 is compatible with both traditional film playback and emerging D-cinema technologies. An internal hard drive is used as the film sound signal source while two DVD drives enable download of film sound information to the hard drive. Giving distributors and exhibitors the flexibility of storing either multiple languages of one title or multiple titles, the XD10 will automatically load and store up to 30 full length film soundtracks.

The XD10 is also capable of playing back enhanced video for alternate media and has networking and pre-show programming features for an integrated presentation.
