Sony Highlights Complete SXRD Digital Cinema System at ShowEast

Sony is featuring its full range of SXRD™ 4K digital cinema projection systems at ShowEast here this week. The line includes the newly introduced SRX-R220 projector, which joins the SRX-R110 and SRX-R105 models. Sony’s LMT-100 4K Media Block and Screen Management System complement these projectors to offer exhibitors a “plug-and-play” projection system.

These technologies can be housed in an enclosure that meets FIPS 140/2 security requirements, in compliance with the Digital Cinema Initiatives specifications for digital motion picture projection. “Exhibitors making the move to digital cinema are looking for all the necessary security and content management tools to be readily available in one easy-to-install package,” said John Kaloukian, director of marketing for Sony Electronics’ Professional Display group. “The combination of these technologies into one comprehensive system provides that type of one-stop solution.”

The media block is a combined server and decoder containing all the components required to ingest, decode and play digital content. It features 16 audio channels. Files comprising feature content, as well as trailers and policy notices, are stored in an attached Redundant Array of Independent Disk (RAID) storage unit. Specific functions include: JPEG2000 decoding, security key management, extraction of audio and visual images from MXF files, alpha channel insertion for sub-titles, and audio and image watermarking.

Users can control the device through either a local computer program using Sony’s Media Terminal Control, or through the Sony Screen Management System. Files can be loaded through an Ethernet® or an i.LINK® IEEE 1394 connection. A 25-pin connector on the media block’s front panel allows for direct connection to digital theater sound systems. Sony’s professional display group also offers a line of LCD and plasma displays that can be used throughout a movie theater for digital signage applications. For example, these flat panels can be placed in lobbies to highlight promotions, coming attractions or theater news. They can also be placed at the entrances to specific auditoriums, to display show times or preview trailers.

The projector’s 4K resolution is derived from its 4096 x 2160 pixel matrix, or approximately 8.8 million pixels, enabling it to deliver four times the resolution of today’s high-definition televisions for home theater use. There are 34 units of Sony’s SXRD 4K projector installed in movie theaters, studios and production facilities worldwide. SXRD projection technology has also found a home in non-cinema fields, including government, production, education, cinema and presentation applications.
