DTS Europe Ltd. Announces Involvement with 2020 3D Media Consortium
DTS Digital Cinema today announced its participation in the 2020 3D Media Consortium awarded as an EU project under Framework 7. This project has been formed to address the development of 3D media production, management and distribution. The project will draw on existing work completed by other media projects (e.g. IP-RACINE) as well as developing further know-how and understanding across a spectrum of activities and has Digital Cinema as a primary market application. The project will use semantic web technologies and will run for four years.
As one of fourteen consortium partners, DTS will contribute to the development of workflow and distribution tools to the project and will use its extensive hardware and software experience to explore real-time audio and rendering solutions.
Operating as an integrated project under the Seventh Framework Programme of the EU, the consortium is playing a crucial role in reaching goals of intellectual property development, economic growth, industrial competitiveness and regional employment. There are five scientific and technical objectives which have the overall aim of advancing media consumption patterns by developing new media production techniques, contribution/distribution networks and display technologies. New and sustainable market opportunities will be provided by the roll-out of novel entertainment material in cinemas, public spaces and the home.
As Europe develops its position in this marketplace, new standards will emerge to assist with the exploitation of new opportunities, and the development of these standards is also a priority objective of the 2020 3D Media programme.
By 2020, the media experience is expected to be much richer and more varied than today. 2020 3D Media proposes to research, develop and demonstrate the production and networked distribution of novel forms of compelling entertainment experience based on technologies for the capture, production, networked distribution and display of sounds and images in 3D. DTS will play an important role in WP3 – “Metadata, semantics, and workflows for spatial media.” DTS’ expertise combined with the wealth of experience in its thirteen consortium partners means that the team is able to cover the whole value chain from research through product innovation to market exploitation.
Tony Nowak, Managing Director of DTS Europe Ltd. stated: “Our extensive experience with content providers and cinema exhibitors puts us in an ideal position to develop tools to handle this extended media requirement. The project should deliver benefits for Europe through the empowerment of content creators and exhibitors and in the provision of choice from a broader range of compelling content.”
