Prehistoric Digital Selects Barco's Latest Digital Cinema Post-Production Projector

Barco, Guinness World Record holder for the brightest DC projector, stakes claim to Hollywood's post-production industry with its latest digital cinema post-production projector, recently acquired by Prehistoric Digital of Los Angeles, CA. Built using the same highly efficient light engine which achieved the world record for brightness, Barco's DP2K-P is designed specifically to meet the stringent quality specifications of the post-production community.

When Prehistoric Digital decided to upgrade its post-production projector after several of its clients' movies were widely acclaimed at the Sundance and South by Southwest film festivals, they turned to Barco's partners at Moving Image Technologies for Barco's DP2K-P to get the quality boost they needed. Prehistoric Digital designed and built its new studio around the projector, which is packed with high-end features typically associated with more expensive post-production systems.

A specialist in digital intermediate color correction and related post-production services, Prehistoric Digital Partner Kevin Cannon wanted the best technology to position the company for bigger work on independent theatrical releases. “After seeing a few demos of the Barco DP2K-P, we knew it would meet our standards for absolutely pristine image and color accuracy,” commented Cannon. “There's no question that what you're seeing on the Barco projector is 100 percent accurate and true. The DP2K-P is a huge asset as we grow our business and will be essential in targeting future opportunities.”

Prehistoric Digital used the DP2K-P for post work on a new independent film releasing this month, entitled “Northeast,” written and directed by Gregory Kohn and slated to appear at the Tribeca Film Festival 'On the Road' series in several major U.S. cities during October.

“My experience is that Barco's DP2K-P is a great projector for the post community. Color space is huge, field uniformity is almost perfect and the special post-production version of Barco's Communicator software gives you full control of the image parameters with ease of use,” said Bevan Wright, Executive VP of Operations for Moving Image Technologies. “We're recommending it highly to all of our post customers looking for a highly capable, accurate post-production projector that's also affordable.”

Barco's new DP2K-P projector elaborates on the proven platform of its successful DP2K B-series, from which it adopts proven benefits such as optimum light efficiency, lowest cost of ownership and user-friendly operation. The DP2K-P integrates Texas Instruments' 1.2” DLP Cinema® chip, a forward-looking choice for 4K compatibility. To prevent dust from intruding in the light engine, the projector is fitted with a patented, hermetically sealed enclosure, which guarantees undiminished brightness and contrast levels over the years and allows for the use of reusable air filters, another Barco industry first. Thanks to its industry-leading DMD cooling system, the projector also delivers a significantly extended lifetime.

“Barco has maintained a steadfast commitment to the post-production industry, meeting the exacting performance demands of post houses and review rooms for many years,” commented Patrick Lee, VP Digital Cinema for Barco. “Contrast, brightness uniformity and accurate color are essential to creating the brilliantly colored and dynamic movie images of our time, and are hallmarks of our complete line of digital cinema projectors.”
